Desires

By Yusuf Misdaq

Parody becomes reality
The absurd blends imperceptibly into our daily dose
Before we know it we are nodding in agreement
Buying everything, seriously
Like a German listening intently to a sarcastic joke they don’t get.

We are capable of sinking like a stone to the bottom of a filthy pond
So much can be added to our weight
So quickly, new desires can become ours
And we long for it, and it acts us out

We move in ways we never would
Miming out the persona of someone we don’t recognize
Praying for something we never thought we wanted

Strangers to ourselves
No hearts within us
But awash with these new desires
All that remains are the desires in us

Clicking us into movement as our limbs
Jerk into action and sprawl us across the cities.
